· All Parents have the right to participate and be involved in the IEP process
· All Parents have the right to be involved in decisions of their child’s education.
· All Parents have the right to examine all of your child’s education records.
· All parents have the right to be given prior written notice for your child’s education meetings.
· All Parents have the right to question educational decisions.
· Placement Decisions and Education Services cannot be made without the parent’s participation. This is pre-determination (A BIG no-no!)
· IEPs must have the collaboration between school and parents.
· Parent Participation overrides IEP deadlines
6 Core IDEA (Individuals with Disability Act) principles: (Cheatham et al, 2012)
1) Zero- reject: All students with disabilities are entitled to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
2) Non-Discriminatory Evaluation: assessments must be fair
3) Individualized and Appropriate Education: individualized services/plan must be provided.
4) Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
5) Procedural Due Process: Parents and schools are held mutually accountable
6) Parent Participation: Parents are partners in educational decisions.
